July 25, 2008

Dear Chairman DeLeo,

On behalf of the 400,000 working families from over 750 local unions belonging to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, I write today to strongly urge you to support HR 1870, which will create "The Jobs Creation Commission." Testimony was heard on behalf of this piece of legislation at a hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor and Workforce Development on February 13, 2008. I wrote a letter of support on February 22, 2008 to that Committee as well. I would like to convey to you the strong support of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and add ours to the many voices calling for this investment in our economy and our workforce. This special commission will thoroughly evaluate the economic environment of the Commonwealth and come up with specific solutions to create and maintain quality jobs.

The members of this unique commission will represent a variety of interests and views that bring everyone to the table with the common goal of strategic, comprehensive, and needs-based economic and workforce development. Massachusetts is in desperate need of a solution to our stagnant job market and steady job and population losses. We all know the statistics about our state’s woeful job creation record in past years. We have ranked near the bottom nationally in job growth for too long. Already the legislature has taken real action in favor of creating jobs this session, and the Massachusetts AFL-CIO believes that HB 1870 is an important next step that can be taken to help our employers and our workforce begin to thrive again. It is a perfect complement to the numerous economic development initiatives put forth by the legislature this session.

The creation and maintenance of good jobs for our state’s families should never be overlooked, and can never receive too much attention. Given that July 31st is just days away, I hope you will strongly consider expeditious and positive action on HB 1870. Please contact our Legislative and Communications Director Tim Sullivan at (781) 324-8230 with questions or for more information. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Robert J. Haynes
President
